Color photo of the Gihon Spring
2020 photo of the Gihon Spring inside Hezekiah’s Tunnel. The Gihon Spring was an unlimited water source for Jerusalem. There were a lot of special events that happened here. One memorable event is when Solomon rode upon his father David’s donkey and was led to the Gihon Spring where he was anointed king by Zadok the priest.
“So Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites, and the Pelethites, went down, and caused Solomon to ride upon king David’s mule, and brought him to Gihon. And Zadok the priest took an horn of oil out of the tabernacle, and anointed Solomon. And they blew the trumpet; and all the people said, God save king Solomon.” 1 Kings 1:38-39
The Gihon Spring was always filled with lots of moving water throughout Israel’s history. King Hezekiah diverted water through the underground tunnel called Hezekiah’s Tunnel to the Pool of Siloam, and fortified the City of David with walls. The ancient Canaanites channeled water down the eastern slope to irrigate the fields in the Kidron Valley and also to fill a reservoir.
