Description
The Kingdoms of Ptolemies and Seleucids were two powerful Hellenistic empires that controlled the ancient Near East in the centuries after Alexander the Great’s conquests. This stock image depicts the vast territories of these two kingdoms, which were formed after Alexander’s death in 323 BCE. The Ptolemaic Kingdom, ruled by the Ptolemy dynasty, controlled Egypt and parts of Libya, Nubia, and the Levant. Meanwhile, the Seleucid Kingdom, ruled by the Seleucus dynasty, controlled much of the territory formerly held by the Persian Empire, including modern-day Iran, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, and parts of Turkey and Afghanistan.
The map shows the key cities, trade routes, and major geographical features of the region, such as the Nile River, the Mediterranean Sea, the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers, and the Zagros Mountains. The Ptolemaic Kingdom’s capital, Alexandria, is marked on the map, along with other important cities such as Memphis, Thebes, and Jerusalem. The Seleucid Kingdom’s capital, Antioch, is also shown, along with other major cities like Babylon, Seleucia, and Susa.
The map highlights the ongoing struggles for control over the region between these two empires, as well as their conflicts with neighboring powers such as the Parthians, Armenians, and the Roman Republic. It also shows the cultural and economic impact of Hellenistic civilization on the region, including the spread of Greek language, philosophy, and religion.
