Description
The Roman Colosseum is one of the most iconic and recognizable structures of ancient Rome. This impressive amphitheater was built nearly 2,000 years ago and could hold up to 50,000 spectators who came to watch gladiatorial contests, animal hunts, and other forms of entertainment.
The Colosseum is an elliptical shape and stands nearly 160 feet tall. The outer walls are made of travertine stone and are adorned with arches and decorative columns. Inside the Colosseum, there were multiple levels of seating, with the lower levels reserved for the wealthy and the upper levels for the general public.
The arena floor was made of wood and covered with sand to soak up the blood from the battles that took place there.
Today, the Colosseum is a popular tourist attraction and is considered one of the greatest examples of Roman engineering and architecture.
