Color photo of the Dome of the Rock

The Dome of the Rock sits at the spot where the Holy of Holies stood in the Temple. When the Romans conquered Jerusalem in 70 AD they so thoroughly destroyed and buried the city that people questioned many things about ancient Jerusalem. The Romans banned all Jews from the Holy Land, and even brought in their own soldiers to live in Jerusalem and even changed the name of Jerusalem to Aelia Capitolina in honor of a Roman god. But in 312 AD the Emperor of Rome, Constantine, had a vision of the Christian cross of Jesus, and he accepted Christianity. Later in 637 AD Muslims invaded Jerusalem and in 691 AD built the Dome of the Rock on the site of the Temple, and claimed that the prophet Mohammed had ascended into heaven at the same place as the Holy of Holies. Today the Dome of the Rock, with its gold dome, is the prominent building in all of Jerusalem.
