Cylinder of Cyrus

Description

The Cylinder of Cyrus is a historic artifact made of baked clay, measuring about nine inches in length and three and a half inches in diameter. It dates back to the 6th century BCE and is inscribed in Babylonian cuneiform script. The cylinder contains a decree by Cyrus the Great, the king of Persia, granting the Jews permission to return to their homeland in Judah after being exiled in Babylon.

The decree also orders the rebuilding of the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem and the return of the Temple’s sacred vessels that were taken by the Babylonians.

The Cylinder of Cyrus is considered one of the most significant artifacts in Jewish history and is often viewed as evidence of the Persian Empire‘s tolerance towards different cultures and religions.
