Description
Color photo of a Dead Sea Scroll discovered in a cave on the northwestern shore of the Dead Sea.
A shepherd boy discovered the first seven Dead Sea Scrolls by accident in 1947, and over 800 manuscripts in Hebrew and Aramaic were discovered. This proved to be one of the greatest archaeological finds in the history of the world.
The scrolls were found in 11 caves in the area of Khirbet Qumran, in Israel. There were about 12 scrolls discovered as well as a large number of fragments of scrolls from every book of the Hebrew Bible except the book of Esther. There were also texts from other Jewish literature from around the first century AD.
