2020 photo of the Eastern Gate that was sealed off in 1541 AD by Suleiman the Magnificent, Sultan of the Ottoman Empire.

“And he said to me, “This gate shall remain shut; it shall not be opened, and no one shall enter by it; for the LORD, the God of Israel, has entered by it; therefore it shall remain shut.” Ezekiel 44:2

According to experts the original Shushan Gate was located further south than the current sealed up Golden Gate.

Description

Color photo of the Eastern Gate on the East Side of the Temple Mount in Jerusalem.

The Eastern Gate sits opposite the Mount of Olives and traditionally the place where Jesus entered the city on a donkey in fulfillment of the prophecy in Zechariah 9:9. Israeli’s believe that Jesus was not the Jewish Messiah but the Messiah is still to come, and because of the Jewish belief in a coming Messiah the Muslim’s sealed up the gate and planted a graveyard in front of it. It would be unclean for any Jew, even the Messiah, to be defiled by entering a graveyard.

“Rejoice greatly O Jerusalem…behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass.”  Zechariah 9:9
