Color photo of an Authentic Tyrian Silver Shekel

Tyrian shekels were exceptionally high in pure silver, and became the official currency of Israel during the first century. They were declared by the rabbis to be the only money accepted by the Temple in Jerusalem. On the face was an image of the Tyrian Heracles, and on the other side was the eagle. The high priests of Jerusalem brought in moneychangers to handle the transactions. When Jesus saw this He turned over the tables of the moneychangers, and said to stop making His Father’s House a house of merchandise.

“And He made a scourge of cords, and drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen; and He poured out the coins of the moneychangers, and overturned their tables” John 2:15
