Color photo of Caesarea Philippi

Jesus took His disciples to Caesarea Philipi and asked, “Who do men say that I am?

In ancient times inside the above cave water gushed out, and there was a hole referred to as the “bottomless pit” because if a stone was thrown into it the bottom could not be heard. This was also referred to as the Gate of Hades (hell) because of the pit.

“And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it” – Matthew 16:18

The water gushes from underground here at the foot of Mount Hermon, and is one of the main sources of the Jordan River.
