Description

Color photo of the Ossuary of Joseph, son of the high priest Caiaphas from the time of Jesus. Scholars believe that this is the ossuary of the Caiaphas of the New testament. It can be seen at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem.

Joseph was high priest from 18-36 A.D. The Bible reveals that he was directly involved with Jesus’s arrest.

Caiaphas’ family burial cave was discovered in southeast Jerusalem, and this ossuary of Joseph is the most elaborately decorated  among the 12 ossuary’s that were discovered.

The ossuary is carved with Joseph’s name in two places saying,

“Joseph son of Caiaphas.”

The name and the elaborate decorations would indicate that this was the ossuary of the Caiaphas of the New Testament. The Bible says:

“then those who had seized Jesus led him to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders had gathered.” Matthew 26:57)
